I agree, it is hard to work out the strategy of some of the incumbent suppliers. It does then become a time consuming tasks to the put together your own solution based on a variety of applications/suppliers and making sure that they can be successfully and effectly integrated.

Yes, 1976 was quite early. My firm bought an Anpac system circa 1977. Converted to 2022 $ those systems in the 1970s were incredibly expensive.

We are now having to spend a lot of time filling these gaps and setting up clients on new programs. This to me is a very bad business model where you allow competitors an inroad into your customers business.

Cost $28000 if I remember correctly. It was an excellent system for its time. The computer was a Wang I think.
There was double depreciation and investment allowance that year, which meant I could claim 80% of the cost.

(You were too young then, Mr Smith! )

Comment on Caring – new post COVID-19 world by Paul Dunn https://smithink.com/2020/10/10/caring-new-post-covid-19-world/#comment-3907 Tue, 13 Oct 2020 02:41:55 +0000 https://smithink.com/?p=11059#comment-3907 Right on guys — caring!!

Well done.

It’s the crucial message from COVID.

And the AICPA has a brilliant ‘take’ on it in their HUMAN SIGNALS report.

It is stunning stuff that I never thought I’d see — the AICPA recommending to Members that they work on HUMANITY as a purpose. Truly amazing. And I’ve sent you the report via email, Mark.

Of course, very happy to come online to your members and talk about the inferences here — it is profoundly important. A defining moment actually.

Comment on Hope in Financial Planning by David Smith https://smithink.com/2019/10/03/hope-in-financial-planning/#comment-460 Fri, 08 Nov 2019 05:02:43 +0000 https://smithink.com/?p=10846#comment-460 In reply to Bob.

You could say that – the planner is Crescere’s planner under Crescere’s AFSL. One planner can support 3 to 4 firms. When they’re working with a firm they do so under the firm’s branded financial planning arm. Crescere’s planner meets the clients from the accountant’s office and works alongside the accountant in providing the service. Hope that makes sense.

Comment on Millennials Rising by David Smith https://smithink.com/2019/08/09/millennials-rising/#comment-457 Wed, 21 Aug 2019 07:22:17 +0000 https://smithink.com/?p=10768#comment-457 In reply to Andrew Bowden.

Thanks Andrew. At this time we have no particular plans to follow-up. It is true that some of the older generation may struggle to be open in the way things might be done in the future. I suppose that was the purpose of this article to encourage them to be more open. It’s hard to generalise but I have already seen some willing to jump ship and create their own firm leveraging the latest technologies.

One of the challenges I am seeing relates to the ability for the next generation to buy into the firm. This is driven by the credit squeeze and high house prices making it hard to borrow money to buy equity.

Your point about business advisers is well made. However, the practitioner who has the client relationship is the one best situated to leverage that trust and to engage effectively with the client about other concerns they may have about their business or personal finances. They may not be the ultimate deliverer of the services but they are certainly needed to unlock the opportunity.
